I’ve got a cure for those of you who have gotten into a rut and are living life without enthusiasm. I’m not talking about depression. I’m talking to those of you who living life in neutral. You may feel unenthused about your job – but you do it. You may feel unappreciated at home – even though you meet your responsibilities in your marriage and/or family life. You may feel that your friendships have gotten stale or your outside interests are no longer very interesting.
Here is how you get out of the rut. Pick out an activity. It could be going grocery shopping or cooking a meal or spending an evening out with your spouse or significant other or doing a project at work or for school or going for a run. Decide beforehand that you a going to make it amazing.
Approach the activity with enthusiasm. Consult with that part of you that is able to call upon activities from your past that energized you at one time. You may have to go way back to your childhood when you could – as all children can – get enthused about seemingly mundane activities. Then filter out the negative self-talk that enables you to predict that you will be bored or you will perform poorly or that others won’t go along with your idea.
I’m not talking about just doing something to be doing something instead of lying around and doing nothing. I’m talking about shifting out of neutral and making it amazing.
Start small, but then add more amazing activities to your repertoire. You may not feel comfortable doing so at first, but don’t let that be an excuse. After you get used to it, your zest for life will increase, as will your desire to participate in life to its fullest.
